In recent years, Guangxi University’s Civil Engineering discipline has established a development framework driven by faculty leadership, platform support, and the dual engines of talent cultivation and scientific innovation. Firmly rooted in Guangxi’s local context, the discipline focuses on national strategies and the major demands of regional economic and social development, driving systematic progress in discipline construction.
The following key milestones have been achieved in recent years:
Maintaining “One International Leadership”: The discipline maintains an internationally leading position in the field of construction and operation of large-span arch bridges.
Achieving “Two Significant Improvements”: The discipline’s Soft Science ranking rose from 36th to 20th nationwide, and the program’s Soft Science ranking rose from 41st to 20th nationwide.
Achieving “Six Historic Breakthroughs”: The discipline made “zero-to-one” breakthroughs in six areas: establishment of national-level research platforms; founding of a National Innovation and Intelligence Base for Discipline Development; hosting of the Secretariat of an ISO Subcommittee; cultivation of national-level young talents; leading the formulation of national and ISO international standards; winning national gold or first prizes in several major competitions.
Achieving “Ten Multiple Increases”: Significant multiple increases have been realized in ten key areas, including national-level talents, high-level research achievements, newly recruited faculty members, major engineering projects served, national competitive research projects, annual research funding, provincial and national-level research awards, faculty participation in journal editorial boards, quality assurance systems for talent cultivation, and the annual number of international (especially ASEAN) degree students trained.

As one of the most influential discipline evaluation systems in China, the 2025 ShanghaiRanking’s Best Chinese Subjects Rankings are based on the first-level disciplines defined by the “Catalog of Graduate Education Disciplines and Specialties (2022)” issued by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Education. The ranking system consists of five major categories—talent cultivation, platforms and projects, research achievements and awards, academic publications, and high-end talents—with 18 sub-indicators and over 70 quantitative measures reflecting disciplinary competitiveness.
